Szeged 2019

Rio is part of sports history now so every athlete and coach focuses on the capital of Japan, the beautiful city of Tokyo where the next Summer Olympic Games will be held in three years’ time. Wow, still three more years? That long? Come on, it’s not that long! No matter how never-ending this journey seems now if the time is spent in the company of a good friend it will sure feel shorter than it actually is. Consider Szeged as your fellow-passenger on this journey to Tokyo and you’ll realize that we are going to be best buddies in the coming seasons leading up to the Games. We are going to begin with a nice, cozy World Cup in 2017 where every participant can have a whiff of what’s ahead all of us. Nothing serious but you might meet some of the others who will give you a hard time getting that much-desired quota for Tokyo in a few years. 2018 will be the year of the warm-up World Cup where the stakes are somewhat higher simply because we will be halfway to Tokyo and team-boats will be created with the hopes of making it to the big one. And then we are getting dead serious. Szeged, still a familiar face but with different features. The ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships in August of 2019 will be in Szeged where roughly ¾ of the Olympic Quotas will be distributed. It’s only 2 years and 3 months away. Come to think of it, it’s not that long, huh?

So, let’s meet in Szeged regularly so we can see each other in Tokyo!
